The Wisdom Lady Generals Volleyball program received a fresh start this year when CTE teacher Kayley Hendrix was named the team’s brand new Varsity Head Coach. Hendrix, in her second year as a teacher at Wisdom, played both volleyball and basketball at Magnolia high school.
She spent the last few years as a strength and conditioning coach for high school athletes in the Cy-Fair area, before jumping at the opportunity to coach a girls varsity sport at Wisdom.
The Lady Generals started off the season slowly after enduring the loss of middle blocker Leslie Zelaya to an ankle injury, and having several other players miss games due to non-injury related issues. But the squad has recently gotten back to being 100%, and they’ve picked up victories in four of their last six matches, to sneak into playoff contention for the fourth and final berth out of district 23-5A, with a 6-7 record.
Wisdom will take on Northside tonight (Oct. 22) at 4:30 pm in a must-win situation, in order to force what would be another match with Northside (7-6) as a play-in game for the fourth playoff spot. Essentially, it’s a do or die scenario, and they’ll need to beat the Panthers twice to earn a UIL berth.
Either way, it’s been an exciting run for the Lady Generals, something that has not happened around here in quite some time. “The girls have really come a long way, and it’s been a blast to see them progress so quickly with their skill levels,” said Hendrix.
Senior setter Jesica Gonzalez is anxious, but ready. “I feel like our whole team has worked so hard to get to this point. We have been putting 100% into every practice, and we just hope that we can keep playing. We feel good about our chances to win.”
