M.L. Wisdom HS; Houston TX – The Wisdom Generals captured the 2019 District 23-5A UIL Academic Championship on Saturday by earning the highest overall point total among the six 5A high schools, at the Houston ISD Academic Championship held at Wisdom. It was their third consecutive (2017 & 2018) overall 5A sweepstakes title, as they outscored Madison, Northside, Sterling, Sharpstown & Waltrip.

The Generals won outright district team championships in 10 of the 16 competitions: Accounting, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Journalism, Literary Criticism, Mathematics, Number Sense, Science & Spelling. Class of 2019 Valedictorian Ethan Song captured three individual titles – Calculator Applications, Number Sense, and Science – while senior Aaron Ni won the gold medal in Mathematics.

Known as the “Mathletes” on campus, Song, Ni, Guerrero and Arreola swept the top four places in Calculator Applications and won the team competition in that event for the third straight year. They are the two-time UIL Texas State Runner-Up in Calculator Applications. Wisdom also won the team event in Number Sense, with Song taking the gold medal, Ni finishing fourth, Natalie Ortega 5th, and Arreola 6th.

The Wisdom Chronicle (www.wisdomshsnews.com) Journalism Team won their third consecutive (2017 & 2018) 23-5A Journalism title. They were led by Junior Carolyn Braddock, who took home four medals among the five Journalism events. Braddock won the gold medal in both News Writing and Feature Writing, while finishing second in Editorial Writing and Copy Editing. Junior Megan Ahmed finished second in News Writing and Sophomore Mara Nezami was third in Feature Writing. Freshman Nashra Hassan won the gold medal in Headline Writing, just ahead of her older sister Sophomore Sidra Hassan, who earned the silver medal.

In 2017 & 18, Wisdom’s Calculator Applications Team of Song, Ni and Guerrero were the only students from Houston ISD to reach the State Finals, as they finished as the runner-up both years.
