Four seniors at Wisdom High School – the Valedictorian Ethan Song; the quiet and shy Aaron Ni, the Longshot Mauricio Guerrero; and the eclectic and outgoing Victor Arreola – were recently voted by their classmates as the group on campus with the biggest “squad goals”, and they were nicknamed the “Mathletes”.
As the two-time defending UIL Academic Calculator Applications Regional Champion Team, and having finished as the runner-up at State each of the last two years, they’ve been laser focused on winning it all in 2019.
“It’s their last shot at it,” said Principal Jonathan Trinh. “They know that this is it.”
Saturday at Sterling High School, in the final tune-up UIL Academic Meet of the regular season, prior to the Houston ISD District 23-5A Championship on March 30, the Mathletes displayed great form and were at the top of their game.
The squad swept the top four placements in Calculator Applications, with Song winning Gold, Ni with Silver, Guerrero the Bronze, and Arreola was 4th. They also swept the overall team competition in Calculator, Math & Number Sense, even defeating 6A level teams such as Carnegie Vanguard. Wisdom is classified as a 5A school.
“They had a great day, and hopefully we are starting to peak,” said Generals UIL Head Coach Eridani Alcantar. “They practice every day after school until 6 pm, so they’re dedication and commitment is evidence of their desire.”
Song also grabbed the top spot in Number Sense, while placing third in Math and Computer Science, and fifth in Science. Ni was 2nd in Math and 6th in Number Sense, while Guerrero was 4th in Math.
Other Generals that placed in the Meet included Wei Jiang Lin Tan finishing 4th in Computer Science and Wisdom Chronicle Editor Alyssa Vazquez taking 4th in Headline Writing.
