The University of Houston’s Jack J. Valenti School of Communications cordially invited our Journalism team to their 2018 Impact Awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 25. Our UIL Coach and Media Adviser David Fanucchi invited a diverse group of students and members of his journalism team: photographers, news editors, news reporters, and more.
The Impact Awards this year took place at the elegant Houstonian Hotel and the recipient of the 2018 Impact Award was none other than TV news anchor and multilingual journalist Jose Diaz-Balart – a Cuban-American anchorman for not only Noticiero Telemundo but also the NBC Nightly News on Saturdays.
Mr. Diaz-Balart spoke to us about the importance of catering information to the public holistically and not shedding light on just one aspect of the story for publicity purposes. We all identified with Diaz-Balart because he is from a diverse background like us, as is most of our student body.
It was very nice to hear Temple Northup – the Director & Associate Professor of the Valenti School – mention us – the Generals! – during his opening remarks, saying that we were the only high school attending the special event. As the district 24-5A UIL journalism champions for 2017 & 2018, we were honored to be there. As a result, we received this invitation to the Impact Awards.
One of our Wisdom TV News reporters – junior Belinda Obasi – had the incredible opportunity to interview Diaz-Balart on camera in an exclusive, back-stage meeting with our journalists. Just prior to that, Diaz-Balart spent several minutes speaking with each of us, and asking what out future career and education plans might look like.
As a female Latina in the world of journalism, I felt the warmth and empowerment that Diaz-Balart and many other public figures inspired us throughout the night, with their admirable careers. My biggest take away was that if you can execute your job well, no amount of effort goes unnoticed. By having the ability to write well, I am able to voice the struggles as well as the attributes that my Latino community has to offer.
On behalf of the 2018 Wisdom Journalism team, we are grateful to the Valenti School of Communication, Mr. Northrup, Mr. Diaz-Balart, and the many planning people involved on the evening, for their incredible hospitality. We learned so much, and enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

About the Writer
Astrid Escobar, News Editor

I am one of the news editors for Wisdomhsnews.com, and I help manage the Words of Wisdom, as well as the Breaking News. Among my responsibilities is editing as well as posting stories. This will be my second year as an Editor, and I am also a member of our UIL Academic Journalism Team. As a senior here at Wisdom, I am part of the Senior Class Leadership Team and I play on the girls soccer team. I would like the Generals to be subject to change in the coming years regarding how we disseminate news, so that we begin to approach what true high schools unity should be.
