Generals’ Soccer Team defeats Huntsville 2-1 to win Region 3-5A in Humble; Math Team wins UIL Calculator Applications Contest at Regional Meet in Magnolia

April 14, 2018 – The Wisdom Generals (21-2-2) Boys Soccer Team captured the Region 3-5A title with a 2-1 victory over Huntsville Saturday at Turner Stadium in Humble. The Generals overcame a 1-0 deficit to score two goals – both by senior Eduardo Salgado – in the last 20 minutes. With the win, the Generals advanced to the 5A State Championship, to be held April 19-21 at Georgetown ISD Stadium. It was the first regional title for the Generals since 2014, when they became the first Houston ISD soccer team to reach the State Championship.

Meanwhile, the Wisdom Generals’ UIL Calculator Applications Math Team won the 2018 Region 3-5A title by earning the highest overall point total at the Regional Meet held at Magnolia High School. It was the second consecutive Regional title for Wisdom in that event, as they are the defending District 24-5A Champions and 2017 State Runner-Up. The 2018 UIL Academic Championships will be held on Saturday, April 28 at the University of Texas in Austin.

“This is one of the proudest moments in my career, knowing that our students are able to rise above the challenges they face every day, and still succeed,” said Principal Jonathan Trinh.

Head Coach Fidel Andrade leads the Generals on the soccer field. “Our kids show up to practice every day, and we don’t even have a field to practice on,” said Andrade. “We never give up, and they did it again today.”

Wisdom has not had a soccer field to practice on since 2015, when construction on their new campus began. This is the first year in their new building. They practice in the gym and at a local park.
The Math team is under the direction of Eridani Alcantar. Wisdom’s Calculator Applications Team of Song, Ni and Guerrero are the only Houston ISD 5A UIL Academic team to advance past Regionals. They finished 2nd in the State last year. “We want to win the whole thing this time,” said Alcantar. “And I think we have the talent to do it.”
