As the Wisdom Generals (14-0-1) Boys Soccer team played against Austin High School on Tuesday at Dyer Stadium, the team continued their mission to stay undefeated in District 24-5A, and remain atop the standings. With a first half goal, they led 1-0, but Coach Fidel Andrade though their effort needed to improve. He spoke about strategy at half time, and how as the regular season is nearing the end, the team needed to start mentally preparing for the playoffs.

The squad responded by scoring two more goals in the second half, for a 3-0 victory. Coach Fidel was happy how the game turned out.
“We have a good team with a lot of potential, I believe that we can do a lot, possibly making it to State. But to get there, we have to have many things in our favor, such as being healthy and for each player to have passing grades – which we are working on,” said Andrade. “We’ve had some injuries that have made me adjust player positions, and that has made it more difficult for us to get used to. But we are excited for our homecoming game and the playoffs.”

Forward Yonathan Funes is happy with the way the squad has performed this season. The Generals have two regular season games remaining, both after spring break. “It felt really good to score a couple times against Austin, because I’ve personally been struggling this year. But I have never given up, and I think we as a team are playing our best right now.”

Midfielder Nkrunziza Olivier feels positive about things as well. “I feel like we have a chance to make it really far this year, and I’m confident that we are more united than ever. Anything is possible, as long as we believe in ourselves.”
Meanwhile, our varsity girls played Austin on Tuesday as well, and came away with a 2-2 tie as Yizel Real scored the equalizer with just under two minutes to play in the game. Real had also scored the team’s first goal in the first half to give the Lady Generals a 1-0 advantage, before Austin struck twice to grab a 2-1 lead by halftime.

The tie kept the Lady Generals in playoff contention, as they are now 10-2-2 in District 24-5A action. With two games remaining on the schedule (3/19 vs Sharpstown & 3/23 vs Waltrip), the girls are focused on gaining that post-season berth. They sit in third place, with the top four teams advancing.
