We sat down with the Generals’ Senior Soccer Captain John Mlondani – one of the best soccer players here at Wisdom High School. Mlondani has helped lead the Generals back to the top of the District 24-5A standings with a 9-0-1 record so far this season.

Q#1: What made you join the soccer team here at wisdom?

A: Well, when I was a freshman, I was a little out of shape. I wanted to join the soccer team so I could start losing weight, but I didn’t fall in love with the sport until my junior year.

Q#2: How do you feel about your team being in first place this season?

A: We all feel good, I can’t just speak of myself. We are putting in a lot of work and there’s a lot of things that we still have to work on. But it shows how well we have been playing, because if you give the effort, it pays off.

Q#3: Do you think the Wisdom team will win district?

A: I know we are going to win, because we put in the work necessary and we practice a lot. Some of us have jobs after school, so not all of our players are available every day, but we make it work. We have replacement players that practice with us from the Junior Varsity to fill in.

Q#4: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: I run a lot, and when I’m not focused on doing something for soccer, I sleep.

Q#5: Are you involved in any other sports? If not, what would be the next sport or club you would join?

A: Not really. I like to run track, so I would probably join that team.

Q#6: What do you recommend the team do more of, so they can keep up with their current placement?

A: Just come to practice, run more, workout. We all have weaknesses. We all have to work on ourselves and our bodies to get better.

Q#7: What is your favorite professional soccer team?

A: My favorite soccer team is Barcelona – they have my favorite player Lionel Messi.

Q#8: Where are you from? Tell me about your background.

A: My parents are from the Congo. But I was born in Tanzania, and then we had to move to the United States in 2009. So I had to adapt to this life and culture.

Q#9: What is your favorite moment of playing for Wisdom soccer?

A: My favorite moment was last year’s first playoff game, when we won. I learned a lot from that game.

Q#10: What music do you play to get ready for the game, on the bus ride?

A: I usually listen to my favorite African music, and one of the songs is “Let me know” by Maleek Berry.
