Students in Mrs. Wilkins’ Business class welcomed a special guest recently, when 2012 Lee High School graduate and alumni Karina Hernandez returned to our campus to speak about financial planning, banking and money. Hernandez is now a personal banker at the Wells Fargo branch at 2824 Hillcroft.
Hernandez presented the students with information about spending plans, budgeting and check writing as a way to begin understanding how to manage their money in a different way other than just dealing with cash all of the time.
“When I walked in the classroom, her students were already learning how to write a check, and it was so refreshing to know this is something the students are being taught,” said Hernandez. “It is essential even in a retail job to ensure you are not a victim of fraud. Knowing what you need to buy a house, how to manage your student debt, and how to have an excellent credit score, are all very important things for young people to know. But, while all of this knowledge comes in handy, sharing it is even more rewarding.”
The former Lee student was very active while receiving her high school education, serving in the JROTC as a Battalion Commander under Sgt. Conrod, and also playing volleyball, basketball and running on the track team.
“Going back to Wisdom (Lee) to speak with Mrs. Wilkins’ class in particular was really eye opening for me. Though I considered myself an involved student in high school, I don’t think I appreciated the diversity and inclusion we had at the school so much back then,” said Hernandez.
Karina is now in her third year working for Wells Fargo, after attending the University of Houston to get her Bachelors degree in Communications.
“I want all the Wisdom students to know they have someone that they can reach out to in their local Wells Fargo y hablo espanol,” said Hernandez. “I hope to see many of their faces again soon.”
